Why is Vitamin B12 important?

Vitamin B12 or Cobalamin is a water-soluble vitamin that is needed for the development and proper functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of some proteins and red blood cells (which carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body).

Vitamin B12 is one of the eight vitamins of the B complex. It participates in the cell metabolism of the human body, in the regeneration of tissues and in the synthesis and regulation of DNA. It also participates in the metabolism of amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates. It is essential for the bone marrow and the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as in the production of energy.

Some of the symptoms of hypovitaminosis (deficiency) of Vitamin B12 include anemia, weight loss, and neurological and psychiatric disorders such as depression and dementia. Besides, the deficiency of this vitamin can cause DNA damage. In the elderly population, low levels of Vitamin B12 are associated with brain atrophy, cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The main foods that contain Vitamin B12 are fish, liver, meat, eggs, milk, and dairy products. The most common sources of this vitamin are of animal origin; in fact, it is the only vitamin that cannot be obtained naturally from vegetables. For this reason, vegetarian people and elderly people must take it in the form of supplements, as they have the highest risk of suffering from the deficiency of this vitamin.
