Estrogen and Injuries

According to some studies, female athletes with very high estrogen levels may have an increased risk of tendon and ligament injuries because women’s hormone levels can affect tendon and ligament characteristics and therefore potentially increase the risk of injury.

For example, very high estrogen levels are related to decreased tendon stiffness, which could predispose to injury. For this reason, the risk of injury may be greater when hormonal levels are higher, especially the days before menstruation.

Estrogen may improve muscle mass and strength, and increases the content of collagen in connective tissues. However, unlike bones and muscles, where estrogen improves function, in tendons and ligaments estrogen decreases stiffness and this directly affects performance and increases injuries

It is important to keep estrogen levels within an optimal range and nutrition is essential to optimize estrogen levels. Vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage, have a phytonutrient known as Diindolylmethane (DIM), which is a beneficial compound that metabolizes estrogens in less potent forms.

But supplements such as Total Estro DIM can also be taken because it helps keep estrogen levels balanced and thus female athletes may prevent tendon and ligament injuries.
